With reference to your Despatch No 17--
of May 6th. 1881, on the subject of the rendition of Chinese
criminals escaped to HongKong, I now forward for your inform-
ation and guidance copy of a Despatch and its enclosures~~
received lately from the Foreign Office in which as you - NAT
will see Lord Granville states that he considers Her
Majesty's Government may properly insist upon the strict fulfilment of the guarantee as regards executions but that
as regards torture at the trial they should be satisfied with the Viceroy's assurance that it will not be resorted
to.
I enclose also for your information
copy in chinese of the Prince of Kung's Despatch to Sir
Rutherford Alcock of 1866 on the subject of summary -
execution.
